Solar cycle 24: solar flares & social collapse or ‘crushing cold temperatures and global famine'?

May 23, 8:52 PM ·

HowStuffWorks: How the ice age worked

This article is one of a continuing series on the impacts of Solar Cycle 24 (2009-2020).

On May 19, 2009, record low temperatures were recorded in 28 states, more than half the states in the United States of America.  Many of these record low temperatures are the lowest in 100 years, and some the lowest in 115 years.  Iceagenow.com, a web portal tracking global temperatures reports, “If there had been record warmth in 28 states, your would have seen ‘we're-causing-global-warming’ headlines plastered across the front page of almostevery newspaper in the country, and TV hosts would have gleefully announced the dire news. . . . But had you even heard about this?”

NOAA’s full report on these locations and record low temperatures is set out at the end of this Examiner.com article.

In an April 2, 2009 article, retired U.S. Navy physicist and engineer      Jame A. Marusek writes: “The sun has gone very quiet as it transitions to Solar Cycle 24…. We are now at a crossroad. Two paths lie before us. Both are marked with a signpost that reads “Danger”! Down one path lies monstrous solar storms. Down the other path lies several decades of crushing cold temperatures and global famine.” “A quiet sun will cause temperatures globally to take a nose-dive. We will experience temperatures that we have not seen in over 200 years, during the time of the early pioneers.

On April 1, 2009  Examiner.com also reported that a January 2009 National Academy of Sciences reported that a repetition of the 1859 Carrington solar flares event during the solar maximum (2012-13) would destroy the high-power electrical energy grid, and cause millions of deaths and $4 trillion damages in the U.S. alone.

To listen to solar science experts, humanity is poised between a Scylla of potential solar collapse by solar flares and a Charibdis of ‘crushing cold temperatures and global famine during solar cycle 24 (2009 – 2020) – both alternative scenarios carrying the risk of global pandemics, and, according to Marusek, “cosmic rays that can lead to genetic mutations and evolutionary leaps.”

In its series on solar cycle 24 Examiner.com has documented the risks of 2012-13 solar flares.  We now begin to document the risks of a quiet sun – or as one Canadian newspaper reports: “Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age”

Forget global warming, welcome to the new ice age

Canadian journalist Lorne Gunter  writes in February 2009: “According to Robert Toggweiler of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University and Joellen Russell, assistant professor of biogeochemical dynamics at the University of Arizona -- two prominent climate modellers -- the computer models that show polar ice-melt cooling the oceans, stopping the circulation of warm equatorial water to northern latitudes and triggering another Ice Age (a la the movie The Day After Tomorrow) are all wrong.

“’We missed what was right in front of our eyes,’ says Prof. Russell. It's not ice melt but rather wind circulation that drives ocean currents northward from the tropics. Climate models until now have not properly accounted for the wind's effects on ocean circulation, so researchers have compensated by over-emphasizing the role of manmade warming on polar ice melt.

“But when Profs. Toggweiler and Russell rejigged their model to include the 40-year cycle of winds away from the equator (then back towards it again), the role of ocean currents bringing warm southern waters to the north was obvious in the current Arctic warming.”

Gunter observes, “The last time the sun was this inactive, Earth suffered the Little Ice Age that lasted about five centuries and ended in 1850. Crops failed through killer frosts and drought. Famine, plague and war were widespread. Harbours froze, so did rivers, and trade ceased.”

Crushing cold temperatures and global famine

The International Journal of Inactivism criticizes  former U.S. Navy nuclear engineer James A. Marusek, (who is, the Journal says “… guess what… yet another nuclear scientist! (sploosh)” in an article citing Marusek as one of the signatories of a Cato Institute petition against global warming regulation.  The Journal states, “The global warming ‘skeptics’ are at it again. RealClimate reported that the neoliberal Cato ‘Institute’ was spamming climate scientists in order to get signatures for its petition against global warming regulation. And now that the petition’s published, we have the International Climate ‘Science’ Coalition claiming that the petition was signed by “over 100 climate scientists”.  One of these signatories it cites is Marusek, no climate scientist but a nuclear engineer.

Marusek’s April 2, 2009 paper on the possible climatic impacts of our currently quiet sun is drawing increased positive, public attention.

Read original sources and decide for yourself

We are reprinting Marusek’s article here at  Examiner.comin its entirety, to allow you our readers to decide for yourself – regardless of your political stance on global warming regulation - his observation that in solar cycle 24 (2009-2020) we may be facing a period of harsh planetary cold and global famine. (Marusek’s views on global warming are summarized here.)

There are two paths ahead; each marked with a “Danger” signpost

By James A Marusek

2 April 2009

“The sun has gone very quiet as it transitions to Solar Cycle 24. The Ap index is a proxy measurement for the intensity of solar magnetic activity as it alters the geomagnetic field on Earth. Anthony Watts (meteorologist) referred to it as the common yardstick for solar magnetic activity. The Ap index for February and for March is ‘5’ a slight uptick from the three consecutive months of ‘4's’ (November 2008 - January 2009). An Ap index of ‘4’ is the lowest recorded number since measurements began in January 1932. This solar minimum has a long ways to go before it can be declared officially over.

“As of the end of March, the cumulative number of spotless days (days without sunspots) is now at 586 days. The transitions into Solar Cycles (SC16-23), referred to as recent solar cycles minimums, averaged 362 cumulative spotless days. Those minimums ranged from 227 - 568 spotless days. Since the current transition now exceeds 568 spotless days, it is becoming clear that sun has undergone a state change. It is now evident that the Grand Maxima state that has persisted during most of the 20th century has come to an abrupt end.

“The old solar cycles (SC 10-15) averaged 797 spotless days, over twice that of the recent solar cycles. Those solar minimums ranged from 406 - 1028 spotless days.

“An increase in the number of cumulative spotless days during a solar minimum correlates to a reduction in the number of sunspots over the entire solar cycle. The old solar cycles overall produced 38% fewer sunspots than the recent solar cycles.

“We are now at a crossroad. Two paths lie before us. Both are marked with a signpost that reads ‘Danger’! Down one path lies monstrous solar storms. Down the other path lies several decades of crushing cold temperatures and global famine.

“If either of these threats materializes, this nation will be hit blind-sighted. Both are related to the current state of the sun. The sun has been in a “Grand Maxima” for most of the past century.

This has accounted for much of the natural warming the earth has experienced. But as evident in this solar minimum, the sun is changing states. It might (1) revert to the old solar cycles or (2) the sun might go even quieter into a ‘Dalton Minimum’ or a Grand Minima such as the‘Maunder Minimum’. It is still a little early to predict which way it will swing. Each of these two possibilities holds a great threat to our nation.

“(1) Reverting to the “Old” Cycles (Solar Cycles 10-15)Since the old solar cycles produced fewer sunspots, one might draw the conclusion that we will be entering a period of reduced solar storms. But this is not true. It is quite the opposite.

“The old solar cycles produced very intense solar storms. The greatest solar storm in modern time known as the Carrington flare of 1-2 September 1859 occurred in Solar Cycle 10. In addition to the Carrington flare, several other massive solar storms occurred during the old solar cycles. These massive solar storms occurred on 12 October 1859, 4 February 1872, 17-18 November 1882, 30 March 1894, 31 October 1903, 25 September 1909 and 13-16 May 1921. How can this be? This is because the old solar cycles produced massive sunspots. It was like the magnetic field energy was still there and had to still be released but during a shorter time interval, so the sunspots exploded in size and power.

“If a solar storm of the magnitude of the Carrington flare were to occur today, the effect on our modern technologically dependent society would be grave. Of these, the greatest threat would lie in the loss of stable electrical power. A massive solar storm could destroy many of the large custom Extra High Voltage (EHV) power transformer in the United States. These items are unique, costly (around $10 million each) and have manufacture lead time of a year or more for replacement. In 2007, I described the effects from a massive solar storm in Solar Storm Threat Analysis. I also laid out a civil defense plan for major solar storms called The Solar Storm Disaster Preparedness Plan. In 2008, the National Research Council took up the subject holding a public workshop to define the solar storm threat. Their findings (which mirrored mine) were published in a report titled Severe Space Weather Events - Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts. In their findings, their bottom line was if a massive solar storm struck the United States today “it would result in large-scale blackouts affecting more than 130 million people and would expose more than 350 major transformers to the risk of permanent damage”.

Imagine the effect of a total power blackout for months/years on 100 million people in the U.S. along with many millions across the globe. The report then goes on to say “Historically large storms have a potential to cause power grid blackouts and transformer damage of unprecedented proportions, long-term blackouts, and lengthy restoration times, and chronic shortages for multiple years are possible.”

“(2) The Sun slipping quietly towards a Dalton Minimum or even a Grand Minima such as a Maunder Minimum.

“Climate change is primarily driven by nature. It has been true in the days of my father and his father and all those that came before us. Because of science, not junk science, we have slowly uncovered some of the fundamental mysteries of nature. Our Milky Way galaxy is awash with cosmic rays. These are high speed charged particles that originate from exploding stars. Because they are charged, their travel is strongly influenced by magnetic fields. Our sun produces a magnetic field wrapped in the solar winds that extends to the edges of our solar system.

“This field deflects many of the cosmic rays away from Earth. But when the sun goes quiet (minimal sunspots), this field collapses inward allowing high energy cosmic rays to penetrate deeper into our solar system. As a result, far greater numbers collide with Earth and penetrate down into the lower atmosphere where they ionize small particles of moisture (humidity) forming them into water droplets that become clouds. Low level clouds reflect sunlight back into space.

An increase in Earth's cloud cover produce a global drop in temperature.

“If the sun becomes quieter than the old solar cycles, producing more than 1028 spotless days, then we might slip into a Dalton Minimum or maybe even a Grand Minima such as the Maunder Minimum. This solar state will last for decades. Several solar scientist have predicted this will begin in Solar Cycle 25, about a decade from now. But a few have predicted this will occur now in Solar Cycle 24. A quiet sun will cause temperatures globally to take a nose-dive. We will experience temperatures that we have not seen in over 200 years, during the time of the early pioneers.

“Temperatures are already falling. Satellites provide generally the most accurate atmospheric temperature measurements covering the entire globe. From the peak year 1998, the lower Troposphere temperatures globally have fallen around 1/2 degree Celsius due to the quiet sun.

This is despite the fact that during that same time period, atmospheric carbon dioxide (at Mauna Loa) has risen 5% from 367 ppm to 386 ppm. The main threat from a ‘Dalton Minimum’ or ‘Maunder Minimum’ event is famine and starvation (affecting millions or hundreds of millions worldwide) due to shortened growing seasons and harsher weather. In the past, in addition to great famines, this cold harsh weather has also lead to major epidemics.

A taste of the cold weather due to a quiet sun.

“Evidence of the Mississippi River, Ohio River, Allegheny River, Delaware River and Hudson River at the New York Harbor freezing and of very harsh winters.

“Recent periods of quiet sun were the Dalton Minimum (1790-1830 A.D.), the Maunder Minimum (1645-1715 A.D.) and the Spörer Minimum (1420 to 1570 A.D.). The Maunder Minimum and Spörer Minimum were solar Grand Minima and each were individually referred to as the Little Ice Age.

A few decades after the Dalton Minimum

“In the spring Eliza, a slave, carrying her young son, fled from Kentucky by crossing the Ohio River on foot. The river was “swollen and turbulent, great cakes of floating ice were swinging heavily to and fro in the turbid waters.” She leaped from one chunk of ice to the next until she reached freedom on the Ohio shore. [Source: Uncle Tom?s Cabin. Harriet Beecher Stowe lived in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1832 to 1850. In 1851, she wrote “Uncle Tom?s Cabin”. Her life in Ohio was intertwined in this work of fiction.]

During the Dalton Minimum

“The Hudson River at the New York Harbor froze, enabling people to walk across the ice from Manhattan to Staten Island. The Hudson froze over completely during particularly brutal winter of 1779/1780, when the surface was solid for five weeks straight and the British rolled cannons over the ice. In 1821, taverns were constructed in the middle of the river to offer warmth and refreshment to pedestrians. [Sources: When New York Harbor Froze Over, 1779-1780 and F.Y.I.]

During the Dalton Minimum

“From 1803 to 1806, Captains Lewis and Clark lead a transcontinental expedition to explore the greater Northwest. During the winter of 1804/1805, the explorers set up a winter base camp near the Big Knife River near what is today the town of Bismarck, North Dakota. The winter was bitterly cold. There were 6 days with temperatures of -30oF or lower. These occurred in 1804 on December 12 (-38oF), December 17 (-45oF), December 18 (-32oF), in 1805 on January 10 (-40oF), January 11 (-38oF), and January 13 (-34oF). Compare this to the current low temperatures of Bismarck, North Dakota in which only one day in the past decade fell below -30oF. On January 15, 2009 the temperature fell to -44oF. [Sources: (1) The Journals of the Expedition under the Command of Captains Lewis and Clark, (2) Weather Underground for Bismarck, ND ]

During the Dalton Minimum

“Early settlers routinely waited till winter to cross the frozen Mississippi river in their wagon trains. In 1799, George Frederick Bollinger led a group of early pioneers from North Carolina to establish early settlements in Missouri. They hoped to cross their largest obstacle, the Mississippi River, on the ice, frozen solid in mid-winter. They arrived on the east bank of the Mississippi river opposite St. Genevieve in late December, pitched camp and explored potential river crossings. St. Genevieve is located about a hundred miles downstream from St. Louis. Daily the thickness of the ice was measured and then on December 31, a chopped hole in the ice indicated thickness well over two feet. The next day the settlers successfully drove their heavy loaded wagons across the river. Between the Dalton Minimum and the Maunder Minimum

“December 1776 was a desperate time for George Washington and the American Revolution. During the night of December 25, Washington led his small Continental army of 2,400 troops from Pennsylvania across the Delaware River made dangerous and barely navigable by huge chunks of ice. Once across they launched a surprise attack on the Britain's Hessian mercenaries at Trenton, New Jersey, capturing 1,000 prisoners and seizing muskets, powder, and artillery. [Sources: George Washington crossing the Delaware River by Leutze, Washington's crossing of the Delaware River]

Between the Dalton Minimum and the Maunder Minimum

“In Boston, Massachusetts on February 22, 1772, Anna, a young school girl, writes in her diary “Since about the middle of December, we have had till this week, a series of cold and stormyweather - every snow storm (of which we have had abundance) except the first, ended with rain, by which means the snow was so hardened that the strong gales at northwest soon turned it,and all above ground to ice.” In some streets about town this mixture of ice and snow is 5 feet thick. On March 11, she writes that the snow is now 7 feet deep in some places around her house. [Source: “Diary of a Boston School Girl” written by Anna Green Winslow from 1771-1773, edited by Alice Morse Earle in 1894.]

Between the Dalton Minimum and the Maunder Minimum

“Just before the opening battles of the French and Indian War in December 1753, George Washington, then 21 years old, crossed the Allegheny River. In their first attempt, Washington and a guide used a raft to cross the ice-choked river and this ended in disaster as Washington was knocked overboard in deep water and saved himself only by catching the raft as it swept by. The severe cold that night froze their clothes and the guide's fingers. The river also froze, however, allowing them to walk across on the ice the next morning. Soon they reached the safety of an English trader's settlement. [Source: 1753: George Washington's Mission to the Ohio]

During the Maunder Minimum

“During the Great Frost of (1683–1684) in England, the River Thames was completely frozen for two months, the ice was 11 inches thick at London. Sea ice was reported along the coasts of southeast England, and ice prevented the use of many harbors. The sea froze, so that ice formed for a time between Dover and Calais, joining England and France. (It is more likely that the shorelines froze and a great mass of densely packed icebergs, some 11 feet thick, built up along the coastlines fusing into a semi-rigid structure that may have connected the two shorelines together.) The Thames was recorded to have frozen over at London during the years: 1649, 1655, 1663, 1666, 1667, 1684, 1695, 1709, and 1716. [Sources: River Thames Frost Fairs and Historical Weather Events 1650-1699] [See also: The Great Frost of 1683-4 and Where Thames Smooth Waters Glide]

During the Little Ice Age, growing seasons in England and Continental Europe generally became short and unreliable, which led to shortages and famine. These hardships were nothing compared to the more northerly countries: Glaciers advanced rapidly in Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia and North America, making vast tracts of land uninhabitable. The Arctic pack ice extended so far south that several reports describe Eskimos landing their kayaks in Scotland. Finland?s population fell by one-third, Iceland?s by half, the Viking colonies in Greenland were abandoned altogether, as were many Inuit communities. [Sources: The Deniers: Our Spotless Sun]

During the Spörer Minimum

“By 1518, early explorers made significant progress in probing and surveying the New World. They described North America as a “land of frozen seas, horrid, barren and scarcely habitable for cold”. “’In the New World, cold predominates. The rigor of the frigid zone extends over halfof those regions which should be temperate by their position. Countries where the grape and the fig should ripen, are buried under snow one half of the year; and lands situated in the same parallel with the most fertile and best cultivated provinces in Europe, are chilled with perpetual frosts, which almost destroy the power of vegetation.’ [Source: The History of the Discovery and Settlement of America by William Robertson, 1826]”

Just a quicky business model here:

- A husband and wife
- 1 market stall
- a trike
- a small trailer with an insulated cooler.

Husband gets up early, drives to get some ice for the cooler.
Husband drives to the coast and picks up a load of fish worth about P 4000.
Wife gets up a bit later and goes to the market.
Husband drives back to the market where he meets the wife and gives her the fish and he leaves to go home and rest.
Wife sells fish, getting about P 6000. Gross profit of P 2000 for the day. After expenses at least P 1000 a day.

Aquaponics

Taking Aquaculture & Hydroponics a Step Further
Combining plant and fish culture in the same system results in a more natural, environmental friendly food production process than traditional agriculture or aquaculture. Instead of using synthetic fertilizers and the few inches of topsoil remaining on our land to grow agricultural crops, in aquaponics, the waste from the fish are used as fertilizer for the plants. The plants in turn purify the water for the fish, allowing valuable resources to be recycled and utilized more efficiently.

There is no effluent discharge requiring costly filtration or wastewater treatment, and although it is an aquatic system, it only utilizes 3% to 5% of the water that traditional land based agriculture requires for irrigation. This means that you can operate an aquaponics system in resource limited regions, from dry infertile lands to urban settings, without the need for cultivable land or vast water resources.

This also means that we do not have to rely so much on food coming from far places, but are now able to produce food locally. For people worried about the quality and the freshness of their food, aquaponics provides a means to assure a continuous supply of safe and nutritious food that can be grown right at home.

Resources on Earth are being strained beyond sustainable limits. Aquaponics offers an economically viable, environmentally sustainable and socially responsible alternative to producing superior quality food locally and more in tune with nature. At Morning Star Fishermen we are learning and teaching others how to move from linear consumption or production processes, to cyclical ones, specifically designed and tuned for perpetuation of basic resources and life supporting systems.

Tilapia - Saint Peter's Fish
• Native to Africa and the Nile River Basin in Lower Egypt
• Omnivore [eats organic material, not other fish]
• Breeds prolifically indoors or outdoors in small areas
• Healthy [low fat - low calorie, protein is more easily digested than poultry or beef protein]
First fish taken into space [with astronaut John Glenn in 1998]

[St. Peter's Fish] Tilapia is also referred to as [The Wonder Fish] and [Nile Perch] Why Tilapia?
Morning Star Fishermen (MSF) chose Tilapia for MSF's Aquaculture Program because they are hardy fish that like warm water, can thrive in fresh, brackish, or salt water, and have excellent tasting, firm, white meat.  The fish also has a unique history and a surprisingly rare combination of qualities that are found in few other fish.

The Genus Tilapia
This Tilapia is endemic to warm waters throughout the world. The aquaculture, or fish farming, of Tilapia is recorded in human history as far back as ancient Egypt. Tradition holds that the Tilapia was the fish that Jesus used to feed the five-thousand on the Sea of Galilee - thus one of its common names, "St. Peter's Fish."   Tilapia is also referred to as "The Wonder Fish."

Vegetarian Diet
Tilapia eat algae and plants, they are not carnivorous. Tiny combs located in their gills enable them to constantly filter and to remove microalgae from their water environment. Because they are low on the food chain, they cannot build up pollutants and other toxins in their bodies - unlike the carnivorous predator fish species. Therefore, Tilapia is a healthier food for humans.

Efficient Digestion
Tilapia convert a greater proportion of their feed into growth than most other fish species. The acid content of their digestive tract is one of the strongest known and efficiently digests most microorganisms.

Strong Immune System
Tilapia are hardy fish that can thrive in salt, brackish, or fresh water.  When well fed and kept in warm water, there are no known diseases that can cause a large kill of the Tilapia stock.  Their strong immune system guards against the infections that often wipe out whole populations of the more delicate species used in aquaculture.

Rapid Growth
Tilapia can grow from fingerling to eating size in about 10 months in an average aquaculture station. Commercial growers have created optimum environments that can grow Tilapia to market size within just six to seven months.

Easy, Uncomplicated Aquaculture
Tilapia is more easily grown than other foul fish species for either commercial or non-profit enterprises.  They may be grown in open ponds cages submerged in ponds, aquariums, or tanks on land.  Tilapia's wide range of tolerance of environmental changes, including, water quality, temperature, salinity, population density, make them ideal candidates for aquaculture. Many other fish used for aquaculture, such as fresh water trout, are much more delicate and prone to disease when stressed by even relatively minor changes in their environment.  With the proper training and approach, Tilapia aquaculture can provide a reliable harvest that is inexpensive to grow.
fish tank with aquaphonic vegetables on top

Nutritious, High-Protein Food Source
Tilapia is becoming more popular every year, as a commercially-grown fish, as consumers discover how good the fish tastes.  Farm-raised fish, are commanding more in the marketplace, because they are free of the industrial contaminants found in many open waterways.

No cultural or taste barriers
Tilapia have scales and are considered a kosher food, unlike catfish, which are prohibited by some religions. Tilapia also has an excellent flavor, with none of the oily, fishy taste that some people object to in many types of seafood.

Easily Marketable
Tilapia have a viable market in all economies - first, second, or third world. Therefore, those people that learn Tilapia aquaculture have more than a protein-rich food source for themselves - they also have a cash-generating crop that can be sold in their local food market. Therefore, Tilapia can do more than feed the people that learn Tilapia aquaculture.  Tilapia can help lift them out of poverty!

Teaching Kids About Money

By Alvin T. Tabañag, RFP

Author of “Kaya Mo, Pinoy! 12 Steps to Build Wealth on Any Income”

Many parents easily forget about the value of money and spending wisely when it comes to our kids.  We parents tend to give our children the best that our money could buy even though it’s not necessary.  Madalas na dinadahilan ay ayaw natin na maranasan nila ang hirap na naranasan natin noon.  Ironically, it is this kind of thinking that could result in our children leading financially miserable lives later.  If you want your kids to have a brighter financial future teach them the value of money and how to manage it properly as early as possible.  Here are a few tips on how to go about it.

#1 Teach yourself about money first. The most effective way to teach something is to teach by example.  So learn proper money management first before you even think of teaching your kids lest they get infected with your bad money habits.  Pano mo matuturuan ng tamang paghawak ng pera ang iyong mga anak kung ikaw mismo ay hindi marunong?   Learn how to create and use an effective spending plan (aka budget).  Teach yourself expense & personal debt management.  Learn to become a disciplined saver.  Once you have acquired these good money habits then you can start teaching your kids.

#2 Give their allowance weekly instead of daily. Help your kids manage their expenses by giving them their allowance weekly or monthly instead of daily.  They will likely spend all their money in one day if they get their allowance daily because they know they have something to look forward to the next day.  Sa simula hindi madali sa anak nyo na magbudget at maaring isa o dalawang araw pa lang ay kalahati na lang ang natitira sa allowance.  So, it’s important that you closely monitor how your child is spending his/her allowance in the first few weeks or months so you can help him/her make adjustments to ensure that the money will last until the end of the week or month.

#3 Get them started with regular savings. Encourage your kids to save a portion of their weekly or monthly allowance.  To motivate them to save you can implement a “matched savings” program wherein you match whatever money is left from your children’s allowance and add it to their savings.  Halimbawa, kung P100 ang natira sa kanyang allowance sa isang linggo, dadagdagan mo ang kanyang savings ng P100 – for a total savings of P200 for the week.  With a matched savings program in place, your child can easily save thousands during the school year.  Every few months, let them deposit their money in a bank account, one that comes with a passbook, so they can clearly see their savings growing.  Nothing inspires more than seeing the positive results of one’s efforts.

#4 Teach them to wait & save for something before buying it. Impulse buying has left countless of people trapped in a lifetime of debt. Teach your kids to become smart spenders and show them how to make each peso count by planning for each major expense.  Kung meron siyang gustong bilhin na may kamahalan, pag-usapan ninyo kung kailangan ba talaga.  If you think it is not a necessity you can let your child pay for it in full using money from his/her savings.  Or you can split the bill 50-50, 60-40 or 40-60.  Resist picking up the tab even if you can afford it.  For really expensive items, help them come up with a plan to save for it even if their current savings can already cover the amount.  This will teach them the value of saving first instead of buying outright.  My daughter has a 3-year savings plan to buy her own netbook even though she has sufficient savings to buy it now.

Blood Sport Philippines

As you might know, I am a Spaniard.  OK, yes, I am half Spaniard.  But, I grow up watching the bull fights.  I love the sport of bull fighting.  It is part of my culture.  The bull fighting of the Philippines exists too, but here is Cock Fighting!  It is what a lot of people call a blood sport, same as bull fight.

Cockfight

Cockfight

This week is a big week for cock fight in the Philippines.  This week is World Slasher Cup II, an 8 Cock International Derby to be held in Cubao, Quezon City.  This derby has entries from over 100 competitors from worldwide!  From Zamboanga Peninsula, we have our own team of cockfighters competing, the MJRG team!  I, of course, will be rooting them on.  The cockfighting is called Sabong here in Zamboanga, and we have many tournaments right here in Zamboanga, but not as big as the World Slasher Cup II.

I know you animal lovers do not like the cockfighting.  Cruel to animals - blah, blah, blah.  It is culture for us.  Including me to see cockfighting.  These cocks are animals, not people.  Why the blah blah blah?

Do you know that additional to bull fighting we also have cockfighting in Spain?  It is in Andalucia, Spain, and very popular.  Maybe it made me almost Filipino to love this sport as they do here also.

No bull fighting in the Philippines, though!  Maybe we can have water buffalo fighting!  What they calling it here, Carabaw.  But, they might be too slow for good fighting!  I did not yet see a Carabaw mad, though!  Maybe they like the Filipino people, never get too mad.  Their blood here is cool, not spicy like my people can be!

What you think?  Pro-cockfight?  Anti-cockfight?  You like chicken soup?  Plenty of chicken soup for the winners every sunday!  He he…

See you at cockfight pit!  Oh, I love my cockfighting!  Maybe I buy some cock soon and start training.  Manny Cockiao!

Global Warming & The Arroyos

Earth heating up due to corruption

Earth heating up due to corruption

You know why we have typhoons in May? That’s because of global warming, says PAG-ASA. And do you know why global warming is turning from bad to worse? That’s because we don’t have trees anymore. Our virgin forests are fast disappearing. And why is that? We have a reforestation program, yes? What’s the problem?

Well, the problem is corruption. Yes, corruption. And it involves a presidential son, no less.

IMAGINE this, even seedlings are now being toyed by this presidential son. Mrs. Arroyo and her minions are raking billions of monies from illegal and legal activities. They are now cornering every single deal there is. Of course, the First Golfer dips his fat fingers into all operator-related activities there are right now but, for a presidential son to stir the broth further? That’s proof enough that corruption is now a family affair, instead of a Mom and Pop operation.

A seedling that cost 2.50 pesos now fetches 55 pesos each. Wow. Talk about 1,000 percent rate hike, that sure tops the US$ 320 million his father allegedly would get from a telecomms deal gone sour.

Infrastructure projects, which this family of greedy misfits already cornered, are estimated to be worth US$ 42.7 billion. Wow, that is sure to top even the Marcoses for greediness. And the palace of greed already admitted that most of these projects are now being controlled by two presidential sons and their lackeys. How many villas in Portugal do they expect to buy with US$ 42.7 billion? Do they also expect to buy retirement homes for their great-great-great-great-great-great grand children and their paramours?

The palace spokesman Cerge Remonde even justified this business by the Family by saying that it’s okey if the presidential sons and their lackeys corner every infra project for as long as there’s no corruption thru commission. Why, Mr. Remonde, are you deaf and blind? Anyway, I’m not entirely surprised since he’s just a peti functionary and he needs to toe the line otherwise, he’ll suffer a JLO.

So, if you’re feeling hot or you suddenly ask yourself why the hell we have typhoons in May, go ask Mikey and Dado Arroyo. Mikey wants every seedling at 55 pesos while Dado wants every single corner of Camarines Sur paved.

For those who are praying at the WPD right now to protect Jun Lozada—don’t. Prayers are for those who listen, not for those who already chose their eternal Fate to side with Beelshebub. What we have as government officials are demons in barongs. And demons deserve exorcisms not masses.

PANGILINAN:
RP economically stagnant for decades

By Michael Lim Ubac
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 18:46:00 05/01/2009

.MANILA, Philippines—Economic indicators show that the Philippines has been asleep for close to three decades and, according to Senator Francis Pangilinan, no one knows when the country will wake up from this economic hibernation.

Citing statistics he culled here and abroad, Pangilinan said that the country’s per capita  income has grown only by 0.75 percent growth from 1981 to the present, versus 400 percent for China, 150 percent for Malaysia and 100 percent for Thailand.

Asked if the finance managers of the Arroyo administration  could still reverse the trend, he said: “If it hasn’t changed significantly in the last 30 years, I don’t see how it will change in the next year. The economic policies we have adopted have failed to address poverty and unemployment. It is time to look for out-of-the-box solutions to end the boom-and-bust cycles of our economy.”

He urged government officials to set aside politicking and personal motives and work together to create more jobs at home.

“We cannot keep on doing the same things and expect different results. We might as well hit ourselves on the head with a rock,” he said.

He also called on the Palace to stop relying on remittances from overseas Filipino workers to keep the economy afloat, and warned that sending workers abroad was not the solution to the lack of jobs here.

“Our overseas Filipino workers are exposed to great risks while they’re abroad, and their families are suffering from various social ills. This is not the solution we’re looking for,” he said, adding, “Sending Filipinos abroad is merely a band-aid solution and will not be sustainable in the long term.”

For the country to prosper, Pangilinan said, public sector leaders need to offer Filipinos a clear vision and a concrete program of action anchored on principles and integrity, rather than a series of stop-gap measures based on the “politics of survival and corruption.”

“We need to sit down and work out a program to create jobs, enable entrepreneurship, and encourage more overseas Filipinos to invest  back home,” he said.

Phillippians 4:

4 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.

5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Hello Donnette, Thanks for visiting my site. l am still in Thailand. Will be back to the Philippines in a week time and might be staying in Romblon Islands for a while to finish up projects of an NGO and the fundraising for Catholic Chapels abandoned by irresponsible priests.

We did the first fundraising and the second will follow in Oct. 2009

Psalm 46

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.

5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.

6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.

7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.

9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.

10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Ecclesiastes 12 (King James Version)

1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;

5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.

9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Psalm 26

1Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide.

2Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.

3For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy truth.

4I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers.

5I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked.

6I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O LORD:

7That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.

8LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth.

9Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloody men:

10In whose hands is mischief, and their right hand is full of bribes.

11But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me.

12My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the LORD.
